Former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih's claim that the assault of Prosecutor General (PG) Hussain Shameem was politically motivated suggests that he has information about the attack, Home Minister Ali Ihusan has said, urging the former President to share information with the authorities.
Solih declaring that the attack was politically motivated suggests he has credible information about the motive and the assailants, Ihusan wrote on X after reposting a tweet from Solih.
"I would like to request former President [Solih] to please share the credible information referred here with the police immediately. I have asked investigators to coordinate with former President's office in this regard," Ihusan wrote.
Police are investigating the assault as a serious case, the minister said, assuring every possible effort to bring the perpetrators to justice.
Shameem was attacked with a hammer this morning. He was struck on the left forearm as he tried to enter his house after parking his cycle. He was attacked by two people on a cycle, the PG office said.
The military has strengthened the PG's security and Police Commissioner Ali Shujau visited Shameem this morning, the office said.
Shameem underwent treatment at the ADK hospital. His condition is otherwise good, the PG office said.
The police investigation is ongoing and no arrests have been made so far.
As former President Solih condemned Shameem's assault, the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) also released a statement alleging that such attacks were possible due to close ties between gangs and senior government officials.
"This party believes that such brutal attacks and brazen attacks against persons in senior positions of the state are possible under President Dr. [Mohamed] Muizzu's government because of the close ties between top officials of this government and criminal groups in the country and the protection provided by this government to those criminal groups," the statement read.
The opposition Democrats has also condemned Shameem's assault, calling it an attack against the entire system.
