Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) Chairperson Fayyaz Ismail issued an indirect warning to the government last night, declaring that the "honeymoon nights are over."

In a post on social media X, Fayyaz said all efforts necessary need to be undertaken now to "arrest" tyranny and dictatorship. However, he did not specifically say which policy of the government that he was speaking against.

"Honeymoon nights have come to an end. We now need to do everything that can be done to arrest tyranny, deception and dictatorship. We will be victorious with God's will," Fayyaz said.

Fayyaz's message to the government came after the Male' city council transferred some of its major projects to the government. With Adam Azim, who was elected as mayor on the MDP's ticket, due to take office, the city council decided yesterday to hand over projects to develop the Male' fish market, local market and parking buildings to the government.

Mayor-Elect Adam Azim also expressed concern over the council's decision yesterday.

"I call on the government to stop efforts with ministers going in to take away the city council's work," Azim wrote on X, calling it a violation of the decentralization law.

"I ask the council to defer implementation of the decision made today [Wednesday] until the mayor elected by the people of Male' could take the post," Azim said.

Former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, the MDP's interim president, also said recently that the party would vigorously hold the government accountable. At an MDP rally, he said the party stayed quiet until then in order to allow the new administration some time.
