The awarding of flat registries will begin after clearance from the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC), the Housing Ministry said last night, despite President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu's pledge to complete handing over the registries for the previous government's flats and land plots by the end of this week.
President Muizzu said on January 2, 2024 that handing over registries of flats and plots of land to recipients in the gazetted lists would be done by the end of this week.
"Making registries and handing over plots/flats to the recipients of plots and flats included in the final list gazetted will go ahead as I have pledged. The Housing Ministry will carry out the work of completing the handover of registries during this week and next week," President Muizzu said in a post on X on January 2, 2024.
The work would have to be completed by the end of today as stated by President Muizzu.
The pledge prompted talk about the handing over of documents starting today. However, the Housing Ministry released a statement denying the claims.
At a press conference on November 19, 2023, Minister of Housing, Land and Urban Development Dr. Ali Haidar said the handing over of flats was suspended because the ACC ordered a halt to the scheme.
Work could only resume when instructed by the ACC, the ministry said.
Despite the stalled handover of flat registries, the handing over of registries for land plots is currently underway.
More than 9,000 plots were awarded under the 'Binveriya' scheme, the majority of which was awarded from Giraavaru with 5,433 plots, followed by 2,219 from Gulhifalhu and 1,351 from Hulhumalé.
Most of the land plot registries were handed over before the end of the previous government's term.
