Vice President Hussain Mohamed Latheef met with United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres today.
During the meeting, held on the sidelines of the 81st Session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York, the Vice President highlighted that climate change is a daily reality for the Maldives, noting its adverse impact on the nation's development.
The Vice President further expressed his gratitude to the Secretary-General for his leadership and efforts regarding climate change and the challenges facing Small Island Developing States (SIDS).
Highlighting the Maldives' key priorities at the UN General Assembly, the Vice President underscored the importance of climate resilience, debt sustainability, and the implementation of the Antigua and Barbuda Agenda for SIDS (ABAS). He also emphasized SIDS' priorities and the necessity of UN reform.
During the meeting, the Secretary-General expressed his solidarity with the Maldives, acknowledging the challenges the country faces due to climate change.
He assured that the United Nations would continue to support the Maldives in strengthening global climate action and working collaboratively to overcome the adverse effects of the climate crisis.
Furthermore, the two leaders discussed issues of regional concern, with a particular focus on the current situation in Palestine.
