The opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has announced that its upcoming congress, scheduled to begin on October 1 at the Male’ City Hall, will be open to the general public.
Speaking at a press conference, MDP Deputy Chairperson (Finance) Mohamed Shifaz stated that since the congress is open to the public, all attendees will be given the opportunity to participate based on the venue's capacity.
"We have opened this congress to MDP’s general members and all interested parties, not just the official delegates, to observe and listen. This is not a closed-door session. It is open to everyone who wishes to attend and witness the proceedings," Shifaz said.
Shifaz further noted that there are 986 official MDP delegates, and more than 500 had already registered within the first 24 hours of the registration period.
The opening ceremony of the MDP Congress is scheduled for the night of October 1. An investment forum will be held from the afternoon through the evening of October 2, while the formal working sessions of the congress are set to begin on the morning of October 3.
During the sessions on October 3, delegates are expected to debate and pass proposed amendments to the party’s constitution.
The MDP expressed concern over the government's refusal to provide a state-owned venue for the congress. Additionally, the party voiced its disappointment regarding the lack of coverage of the event by the state broadcaster, PSM.
