The Elections Commission (EC) has gone into additional discussions on the date of the upcoming parliamentary elections following a letter sent by the main opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP).

The MDP sent a letter to the EC accusing the electoral body of ignoring advice provided by institutions and acting with government influence to hold the elections during Ramadan.

The party has also requested for the election to be held after the fasting month of Ramadan.

EC Vice President Ismail Habeeb told reporters today that the commission had previously decided to announce a date for the polls today, but the announcement has been postponed following a letter sent by MDP.

"The commission held discussions today ahead of the press conference because of that letter. The commission decided to negotiate with the political party and announce a date this week," he stated.

He said a meeting with MDP is scheduled for tomorrow at 11:30 am to discuss the date of the election.

Habeeb said the date of the election would be decided after considering the convenience of the public and candidates.

The commission will decide and announce the best date it sees fit, taking into account the fact that the voter turnout may be low during Ramadan.

The parliamentary committee recommended to the EC to hold the elections after Ramadan. But Habeeb previously said the EC will face difficulties in making arrangements for a second round if the election is held after Ramadan.
