The opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has denied attempting to impeach President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu.
At a press conference by the MDP parliamentary group today, Deputy Speaker and Hoarafushi MP Ahmed Saleem said the party has not decided to impeach the President.
"We are hearing about an impeachment vote because those connected with the government are talking about it. I feel that they believe their policies or actions have made the people lose confidence in them," he said.
Saleem said there has been no discussion in the MDP to impeach the President.
"I want to say with absolute certainty that the MDP parliamentary group has no stand on it yet. And we have not put it on the agenda or debated it. And as a party, the MDP has not instructed us on the matter. But impeachment is permitted by the Constitution. The Constitution ensures the power of the people,” he said.
The rumors about an impeachment attempt began circulating after MDP amended the rules on the impeachment process.
During a rally of the ruling People's National Congress (PNC) on Thursday night, President Muizzu spoke about the rumors.
“There are MDP MPs who will not vote against me even if they cut off their fingers. I know that,” he said.
