In the wake of serious incidents involving gas cylinder explosions in Haa Dhaal Makunudhoo and Haa Dhaal Kulhudhuffushi, President-Elect Dr. Mohamed Muizzu on Saturday urged lawmakers to expedite passage of occupational health and safety legislation currently before parliament.

Four people were injured in an incident that occurred during the refilling of a cylinder used for fire training at the Kulhudhuffushi airport on October 19. One of the victims was sent abroad for further treatment.

On Saturday, two expatriates died after a gas cylinder exploded during welding work.

In a statement, Muizzu called on the relevant authorities to investigate the causes of the blasts and to take measures to ensure that such tragic incidents do not happen again.

“In order to find the necessary systemic solution, I ask the honorable members of parliament to expedite work on the occupational health and safety bill submitted to parliament,” the statement read.

As both incidents occurred at the workplace, Muizzu also called for all members of the public to act responsibly and carefully in order to minimize such incidents and to ensure the safety of workers.
