Police Commissioner Mohamed Hameed has announced his intention to retire on November 11.
Hameed revealed the decision in a post on the police blog. He has also confirmed the decision to Adhadhu.
In the post, Hameed shared challenges that he faced in the past five years, writing about personal and professional matters.
"The institution was very much in disrepute at the juncture when I assumed the post. I was forced to set aside my self-interest and fulfill my responsibilities after uniting the senior officers," Hameed wrote.
Hameed said he was lucky to have been able to return to the police service after the "stain" on his career in 2012.
"It was my luck to have the opportunity to come back to the institution that I fell in love with at the age of just 17," he wrote, recalling what he faced in his career after the change of former President Mohamed Nasheed's administration in 2012.
Hameed expressed gratitude to everyone who helped him serve after returning to the police. The opportunity to serve as head of the police was a source of joy, he wrote.
The Commissioner of Police is the most senior officer and highest-ranking staff of the Maldives Police Service. The power to appoint and dismiss the police chief is vested by law with the President.
