The government has expanded the eligibility criteria for flats to be awarded under the 'Gedhoruveriya' housing scheme and reserved 300 flats for people who have been working in resorts for 15 years.
State Minister for Housing Akram Kamaludeen said President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih decided to award 300 flats to resort workers who have spent 15 years in the tourism industry. Further details will be revealed later, he said.
The government is building 32 towers with 18 floors each in Hulhumale', including 1,200 two-bedroom units and 2,800 three-bedroom units.
In August, the Fahi Dhiriulhun Corporation contracted Indian company Kalpataru Projects International Limited (KPIL) to build 4,000 additional housing units in Hulhumale'. A separate project was also awarded to build a further 2,000 units.
State Minister Kamaludeen said preparations are underway to sign a contract to build an additional 3,500 housing units in order to provide flats to all eligible applicants.
