President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, who is running for re-election, has said that 90 percent of eligible voters will cast their ballots in Saturday's presidential election.
"I am confident that the voter turnout will be between 88 percent and 90 percent in this election. I see the trend as such," he told reporters after casting his vote.
Solih said he expects a record voter turnout for this election.
Some 282,395 people are eligible to vote in the presidential election, including 27,006 first time voters, according to the Elections Commission (EC).
If 90 percent of the voters cast their ballots, it will be the highest voter turnout since the adoption of the new constitution in 2008.
This year's election also sees the highest number of candidates since 2008. There were six candidates in 2008, four candidates in 2013 and two candidates in 2018.
The winning candidate must secure above 50 percent of the vote. If no candidate wins a majority in the first round, a run-off will be held between the first- and second-placed candidates.
The second round if required will take place on September 30.
