Police have informed the parliament that a complaint filed with bribery allegations against MPs that left the Democrats cannot be registered.

Former President and Parliament Speaker Mohamed Nasheed filed the case with the police accusing MPs of accepting bribes to switch parties.

The allegation came after two MPs left Democrats to return to the ruling party. They are Thoddoo MP Hassan Shiyan and Kulhudhuffushi North MP Yasir Abdul Latheef.

“The Speaker of Parliament has filed a complaint with the police requesting them to look into the alleged act of bribery involving MPs switching political parties in the run-up to the presidential election,” parliament communication director Hassan Ziyau said earlier.

But a police spokesman said the letter sent by the parliament did not provide the basic information needed to launch a criminal investigation.

A letter has been sent to the parliament to inform that it does not appear that the case can be registered, the spokesman added.

"And if there is such information, the Maldives Police Service believes that such cases should be referred to the ACC as the Anti-Corruption Commission has the main jurisdiction to investigate bribery cases," he said.
