The Prosecutor General’s(PG) Office has said that it decided not to press corruption charges against Fenaka Managing Director Mohamed Afeef Hussain because his actions did not result in any financial loss to the state.
According to the PG Office, evidence from the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) investigation revealed that a letter had been prepared to register a car belonging to Afeef’s wife at a garage under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Housing.
However, PG Office spokesperson Ahmed Shafeeu noted that since the Male’ City Council did not ultimately register the vehicle at the garage as requested in the letter, the state suffered no loss, and Afeef gained no undue advantage from the act.
Corruption allegations resurface against Fenaka MD Afeef
Corruption allegations have resurfaced against Fenaka MD Mohamed Afeef Hussain regarding the illegal registration of a private vehicle. Although the ACC found sufficient evidence to prove a criminal offense, the Prosecutor General’s Office has decided not to press charges, leading to the case being filed without prosecution.
Shafeeu confirmed that administrative action had previously been taken against both Mohamed Afeef and Adam Shafeeu, the individual who prepared the letter.
"Therefore, in a situation where no one received an illicit benefit or advantage, and where loss to the state was prevented, we determined that since administrative measures have already been taken against Mohamed Afeef Hussain and Adam Shafeeu, there is no public interest in pursuing further criminal prosecution," the spokesperson said.
The case was filed with the ACC five years ago by former Male’ City Councilor Saif Fathih. The complaint alleged that Afeef had attempted to register a private vehicle at a government ministry's garage while serving as the Director General of Public Works.
