The police conducted an operation in Male' and confiscated digital devices from three suspects in connection with four Maldivians accused of plotting and aiding a terror attack in a neighboring country in late 2017.

The Maldivians were also alleged to have provided financing to a foreign terrorist organization.

In a brief media statement on Sunday night, the police said the operation was conducted in light of evidence and investigation information provided by two neighboring states.

Three locations in Male' were raided and three digital devices were seized, the police said, without disclosing any details.

Further investigations are underway and the Maldives has also been sharing information with the neighboring countries, the statement noted.

The counter-terrorism operation came after the US Treasury Department's Office Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) on August 1 designated 29 Maldivians as terrorists and decided to sanction 30 local companies. The Maldivian government and law enforcement agencies have yet to officially comment on the decision.
