President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has submitted candidacy papers to contest in the September presidential election.
His forms were handed over to the Elections Commission (EC) at 9:15 am by campaign agent Mohamed Nashiz and campaign manager Mohamed Rasheed Hussein.
Solih has named MP Mohamed Aslam as his running mate and has been traveling across the country for campaign events.
He is running for re-election with the backing of Adhaalath Party (AP) and Maldives Development Alliance (MDA).
The ruling Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) held an internal primary in January to decide the winner of the party's presidential ticket.
Solih secured the ticket for re-election by running against former President and parliament Speaker Mohamed Nasheed.
Months after the defeat, Nasheed left the MDP and formed the Democrats which has been campaigning with its candidate MP Ilyas Labeeb.
