In a move to strengthen the national healthcare system, the government has established a new entity, the "Maldives Tertiary Hospitals Group" (MTHG), to manage all tertiary hospitals under a single governing board.

The President's Office stated that this change introduces a hybrid centralized model for hospital management. The administration noted that this restructuring will facilitate the delivery of government hospital services under a unified framework.

With the establishment of the Tertiary Hospitals Group, the governing boards of the Male' City Group of Hospitals (MCGH)—which previously managed facilities in the capital region—and the governing boards of state-owned tertiary hospitals in the atolls have been dissolved.

The dissolved boards include those of Kulhudhuffushi Regional Hospital, Ungoofaaru Regional Hospital, Laamu Gan Regional Hospital, Dr Abdul Samad Memorial Hospital in Gaaf Dhaal Thinadhoo, and Addu Equatorial Hospital.

"The Governing Board of the Maldives Tertiary Hospitals Group will operate under the guidance of and be accountable to the President, in coordination with the Ministry of Health. The board’s activities will be directly overseen by the Principal Secretary to the President on Tertiary Health Services," the government announced.

The government has appointed Dr Abdul Azeez Yoosuf, a veteran of the healthcare sector, as the Chairperson of the newly formed 18-member governing board. Hussain Haleem has been appointed as Vice Chairperson. The board also includes Ibrahim Abdul Razzaq Haleem, the CEO of Dharumavantha Hospital.

Under this new group, the administrative operations of Dharumavantha Hospital, Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH), Hulhumalé Hospital, and Villimalé Hospital will be centralised. Additionally, the Maldives Blood Services and the Thalassemia Centre will also operate under the oversight of the MTHG.

In addition to the tertiary hospitals located in five atolls, the management of Fuvahmulah Hospital has also been transferred to the Maldives Tertiary Hospitals Group.
