Kyrgyzstan opened a new chapter under head coach Urmat Abdukaimov with a commanding 5–0 victory over the Maldives in a FIFA international friendly at the Dolon Omurzakov Stadium in Bishkek on Monday night.
The emphatic victory gave Abdukaimov a winning start to his tenure as Kyrgyzstan head coach, while the Maldives suffered a second heavy defeat in their September international window following their 3–0 loss to China four days earlier.
Kyrgyzstan took control almost immediately and turned the match into a one-sided contest before half-time.
Erbol Atabaev opened the scoring in the 11th minute, giving the hosts an early advantage. Sirozhiddin Astanakulov doubled Kyrgyzstan’s lead in the 20th minute before Atabaev struck again just three minutes later to make it 3–0.
The pressure continued as Valerii Murzakov added a fourth in the 32nd minute, before Joel Kojo completed a devastating first-half performance in the 42nd minute.
Kyrgyzstan went into the break with a 5–0 advantage, with all five goals coming inside the opening 42 minutes. Match records confirm the sequence of goals, with Atabaev scoring twice and Astanakulov, Murzakov and Kojo each finding the net once.
Maldives struggled to create a meaningful attacking threat as Kyrgyzstan dominated possession and territory.
Reported match statistics gave Kyrgyzstan 69 percent possession, 15 shots, nine shots on target and 14 corners, while the Maldives managed five shots and one on target.
With the result effectively decided before the interval, Abdukaimov used the second half to make significant changes and assess his squad as he begins building his team ahead of the 2027 AFC Asian Cup final stage. The hosts were unable to add to their tally after the break, but the five-goal first half was enough to secure a comprehensive victory.
The result also marked an important moment in Kyrgyzstan's history against the Maldives.
It was the first Kyrgyzstan victory over the Maldives since 1997, when the two sides met twice in the qualifying campaign for the 1998 FIFA World Cup. Kyrgyzstan won the first meeting 3–0 on June 6, 1997, before recording an even bigger 6–0 victory in the return match on June 13.
Maldives then turned the rivalry around in their next two encounters. They defeated Kyrgyzstan 2–1 in a 2011 friendly and followed that with a 2–0 victory in the 2014 AFC Challenge Cup, leaving the head-to-head record at two wins apiece before Monday's match.
Monday's encounter was therefore the first meeting between the two nations in 12 years, with Kyrgyzstan now reclaiming the advantage in the historical series.
For Abdukaimov, the result represents an ideal beginning to his first assignment in charge. He had previously emphasized the importance of players' physical condition when selecting his squad and said the national team consisted of the best players available to Kyrgyzstan at the time, with the performances of players at their respective clubs playing an important role in selection.
The friendly was also part of a broader preparation programme for Kyrgyzstan ahead of the 2027 AFC Asian Cup final stage. The Kyrgyz Football Union had announced the Maldives and Lebanon matches as part of the team's preparations under its new head coach.
For the Maldives, however, the defeat leaves a difficult challenge ahead. The team had entered the international window seeking valuable competitive experience under István Urbányi, but have now suffered consecutive defeats against China and Kyrgyzstan without scoring.
Urbányi's current tenure has also included work with both the senior national team and the Maldives U20 side. Across the eight matches in which he has served as head coach of the two national teams, he remains without a victory.
Maldives will now turn their attention to Lebanon, with the next friendly scheduled for Thursday, October 1, bringing their three-match international window to a close.
The three matches against China, Kyrgyzstan and Lebanon were arranged as an important preparation period, giving the Maldives an opportunity to test themselves against higher-ranked opposition ahead of SAFF Championship in November.
For Kyrgyzstan, meanwhile, the 5–0 victory provides a strong opening statement for Abdukaimov's new era, while the focus now shifts toward continuing preparations for the 2027 Asian Cup.
