Odi Sports Club have appointed Argentine coach Luciano Theiler as their new head coach, bringing an experienced international football figure back to the Maldives after 18 years.
Theiler returns to Maldivian football in a new role after previously playing for Victory Sports Club in 2008. His appointment marks a return to the country where he spent part of his playing career, this time as a professional coach tasked with leading Odi in the top tier of Maldivian football.
The appointment comes after Odi and Portuguese coach Rui Gregorio mutually agreed to end their contract, bringing Gregorio's spell with the club to an early conclusion. Theiler now takes charge as Odi look to strengthen their campaign in the country's top-flight competition.
The 45-year-old Theiler, born on 1 June 1981, holds both CONMEBOL PRO and UEFA PRO coaching licences, according to his professional coaching profile.
His coaching career has taken him across South America and beyond. Theiler began his coaching career as an assistant coach before moving into head-coaching positions, building experience in Argentina, Paraguay, Peru and Bolivia. His listed coaching career includes Sportivo Belgrano, Instituto Atlético Central Córdoba, Guillermo Brown, Independiente Rivadavia, Deportivo Maipú, General Caballero, Guaireña, Alianza Atlético Sullana and Club Jorge Wilstermann.
His coaching journey has also included involvement in major international competitions. His profile records experience in the Copa Sudamericana with Club General Caballero and the UEFA Conference League with Maccabi Haifa FC.
One of the highlights of his coaching career came with Deportivo Maipú, where he is listed as a tournament champion in 2021. His profile also records a championship achievement during his career with Club Atlético Mitre.
Theiler's playing career, meanwhile, was equally international. After beginning his career in Argentina, he represented clubs including Belgrano, Alumni de Villa María, General Paz Juniors, Independiente de La Rioja, San José, Patronato and Victory Sports Club. His career then took him across Asia, with spells at Al Karamah in Syria, Al Ahed in Lebanon, Persiba Bantul in Indonesia and Muktijoddha Sangsad KC in Bangladesh.
His 2008 stint at Victory is particularly significant for Maldivian football, as it means Theiler is returning to a country and football environment he already experienced as a player. His playing spell with Victory is also independently recorded in football databases and contemporary football references.
Theiler later transitioned fully into coaching, initially working as an assistant before taking charge of clubs in Argentina and subsequently moving into senior managerial roles abroad. His return to the Maldives therefore represents more than a new coaching appointment for Odi. It is also a return to a country that featured in the early international chapter of his football career.
Odi, competing in the top tier of Maldivian football, will now begin a new phase under Theiler, with the Argentine coach bringing experience from multiple footballing environments and two of the world's major coaching licence systems.
For Theiler, the appointment provides an opportunity to reconnect with Maldivian football from the technical area after first experiencing the country's game as a player in 2008.
The new Odi head coach now faces the task of translating his extensive international experience into results on the Maldivian domestic stage as the club continues its campaign in the country's top flight.
