Police have seized a large number of vape cartridges during a special operation targeting the illegal importation and distribution of vaping products.
According to the police, two Maldivian men were intercepted and questioned on the street as part of the operation. Authorities searched their motorcycle, as well as an apartment in the Amaan Udhares building suspected to be linked to the individuals.
Police confirmed that 156 vape cartridges and several nano-sticks, believed to have been imported illegally, were discovered during the search.
In addition to the vaping products, a significant amount of cash suspected to be proceeds of crime was recovered from the apartment. Police reported seizing over MVR 6,000 during the raid.
Authorities have not yet disclosed details regarding the identities of those arrested or whether additional suspects are involved in the distribution network.
The operation was conducted on September 21, following intelligence reports received by the police.
Under current laws, individuals found selling vapes face a fine of MVR 20,000, along with an additional penalty of MVR 10,000 for every individual unit sold.
