Mohamed Shamin, an activist for the opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), was arrested today.
His legal team informed Adhadhu that he was taken into custody at Velana International Airport.
According to the court warrant, Shamin was arrested on allegations of breaching a police cordon during an MDP protest on the night of August 28. He is accused of crossing barricades set up by the police to close off the intersection of Chandhanee Magu and Didi Goalhi.
The evidence cited against him includes statements from officers at the scene, CCTV snapshots, and an intelligence report.
This is not the first time Shamin has been detained; he was previously arrested and held in custody in May. That arrest occurred during protests held in Male' advocating for journalists' rights.
