Home Minister Ali Ihusaan has requested the Maldives Police Service to clarify information regarding allegations made by former President Abdulla Yameen concerning the fire at the Green Building in December 2024.

In a post on Facebook, Ihusaan noted that a joint investigation conducted by the Maldives Police Service and international experts into the fire, which gutted the building housing three government ministries, concluded that the incident was caused by an electrical short circuit.

Ihusaan further stated that the police had informed him that the investigation found no evidence to support criminal charges against any individual.

However, during a People’s National Front (PNF) rally held on September 5, Yameen alleged that the building was intentionally set on fire. He further claimed that the police are aware that the perpetrator is an individual close to President Mohamed Muizzu.

"Therefore, I have requested the Maldives Police Service to clarify the information known to him and to investigate any further matters that may require attention in this case," Ihusaan said.

"At the same time, I have also requested the National Integrity Commission to investigate the allegations made by the former President against the Maldives Police Service."

The fire in December 2024 completely destroyed the building housing the Ministry of Housing, the Ministry of Construction, and the Ministry of Environment, resulting in the loss of important documents and servers.

Following the incident, the services of these sectors were temporarily relocated to Dharubaaruge. The Ministry of Housing and the Ministry of Construction have since been merged into a single ministry.
