The Maldives Police Service has taken action against an individual for dangerous and reckless driving following a video that surfaced on social media.
The viral footage shows a young man operating a motorcycle with only one hand on the handlebars, while sitting with both legs dangling off to one side of the vehicle instead of straddling it. At certain points in the video, he is seen holding onto the back of the seat with one hand.
"Following a social media video brought to the attention of the Maldives Police Service showing a vehicle being driven dangerously and recklessly, the vehicle and the driver have been identified. The vehicle has been impounded for 30 days, the driver's license has been suspended, and the individual has been fined," the police stated.
Last month, another video went viral showing dangerous motorcycle manoeuvres on the Sinamale' Bridge and the Male'-Hulhumale' Highway. In connection with that incident, police impounded three motorcycles for a 30-day period.
According to statistics released by the police last month, 1,355 accidents were recorded in Male' and on the bridge highway alone during the first six months of this year (January to June). This accounts for an average of 7.49 accidents per day.
During the first half of the year, an average of 226 accidents occurred per month. The highest number of accidents was recorded in January, with 253 incidents.
The lowest number of accidents was recorded in February, with 191 cases. However, following February, the figures saw a 23.56 percent increase in March.
