A 35-year-old Maldivian man has been arrested following a dangerous vehicle collision in Fuvahmulah City that left a woman and a young child injured.
According to police, the incident occurred yesterday around 6:22 pm in front of the Moodige area when a speeding car struck a motorcycle. Instead of stopping, the vehicle fled the scene at high speed before colliding with another car and eventually crashing into a palm tree.
The woman operating the motorcycle and an eight-year-old girl on the backseat sustained various injuries and were treated at Fuvahmulah Hospital. Police confirmed that the hospital has since reported both victims are in stable condition and their injuries are not life-threatening.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the suspect had allegedly hijacked the vehicle. Police said that the man had assaulted the car's owner and threatened to destroy the vehicle before forcibly taking it.
"Initial findings suggest that the driver was under the influence at the time of the accident," the police statement read.
The authorities are continuing their investigation into the matter.
