A police officer who went missing from a police speedboat during an operation last night has been found dead underwater.
Adhadhu has learned that the deceased is 33-year-old Ahmed Asif from Haa Alif Uligan. It is understood that he was an officer attached to the Drug Enforcement Department.
"During a police operation conducted in the early hours of June 11, 2026, an officer aboard 'Police Launch 57' went missing. A search was launched immediately after the incident was reported. During the search, the officer was located underwater," the police said in a message to the media.
Asif was transported to the Mathiveri Health Centre in Alif Alif Atoll. Police confirmed that he was already deceased upon arrival at the facility.
Sources informed Adhadhu that the police were conducting a counter-narcotics operation last night. It is further understood that the operation took place near Alif Alif Himandhoo.
The police added that they are providing necessary support to Asif's family and the fellow officers who served alongside him during last night's operation.
"In this time of grief, the Maldives Police Service is providing all necessary assistance to the family of the deceased officer and his colleagues," the police statement read.
The police are currently investigating the incident.
