The Hithadhoo Magistrate Court has issued an order to shut down "Laamiyaageáage," a house in Addu City Hithadhoo suspected of operating as a "drug cafe" where narcotics are provided and consumed.
Police confirmed that the court issued the 90-day closure order last Monday. Issued under the Drugs Act, this marks the first time the Addu City Hithadhoo Magistrate Court has ordered the closure of a premises used for drug consumption services.
Under the court order, unauthorized entry or exit from the closed premises during the specified period is a criminal offense. Police have warned that strict legal action will be taken against anyone who enters the site without permission or causes damage to the property.
A similar order was issued by the Fuvahmulah Magistrate Court last month to close a drug cafe operating in Fuvahmulah City. That establishment, located at "Gulisthaanuge" in the Funadu district, was ordered to remain closed for 85 days.
Authorities stated that efforts are ongoing to identify other locations used for drug trafficking and consumption services and to shut them down in accordance with the law.
The Criminal Court has previously issued similar closure orders for drug cafes operating in the capital, Male'.
