Police have arrested former journalist Hussain Hassan without prior warning, ahead of a protest scheduled for tonight in Male' in defense of press freedom.
In addition to Hussain Hassan, another individual was also taken into custody.
According to an eyewitness journalist, the two men were complying with police orders and standing on Chaandhanee Magu, avoiding Majeedhee Magu, when a group of officers approached and arrested them.
"They were being compliant and staying exactly where the police told them to move back to. However, another group of officers came and arrested them," the journalist said.
Former President Mohamed Nasheed also participated in last night’s protest. Marking his return to street demonstrations after nearly a decade, Nasheed joined the call for the release of Adhadhu journalists Mohamed Shahzan and Leevan Ali Naseer. Shahzan was targeted after questioning President Mohamed Muizzu, while Leevan was detained for reporting on a gag order prohibiting discussion on the "Aisha" documentary.
On May 12, the Criminal Court sentenced Leevan to 10 days and Shahzan to 15 days in prison for contempt of court. Both are currently being held at Maafushi Prison.
A total of nine individuals were arrested during last night’s protest.
