Protests have broken out in Male' calling for the immediate release of Adhadhu journalists Shahzan Mohamed and Leevan Ali Naseer.
The demonstration commenced at the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) headquarters, led by former President Mohamed Nasheed.
Hundreds of people gathered as Nasheed addressed the crowd upon reaching the Artificial Beach area. Video footage from the scene shows police attempting to confiscate a sofa that protesters were using as a prop to express their grievances.
The protesters later moved to the junction of Chaandhanee Magu and Majeedhee Magu. As the crowd voiced their concerns, Adhadhu CEO Hussain Fiyaz also joined the call for the journalists' immediate release.
While some reports indicate that one protester was taken into custody, the police have not yet confirmed any arrests.
As a large number of police officers attempted to disperse the crowd, at least one individual was seen injured and lying on the ground.
Despite these efforts, the protest has not been broken up. Participants maintain that they will continue to demonstrate until the journalists are set free.
