The Human Rights Commission of the Maldives (HRCM) has issued a press statement condemning protesters and echoing remarks made by President Mohamed Muizzu regarding the ongoing nightly protests in Malé by the opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) and People's National Front (PNF).
In its statement, the HRCM claimed that during the protests organized by certain political parties, rhetoric violating public social standards is being used. The Commission noted that these remarks, disseminated through the media, incite hatred among the public and encourage unrest.
"We note that opinions expressed at political rallies and gatherings, as well as through media and social media, which call for the incitement of hatred, the disruption of community peace and harmony, and the encouragement of violent acts, are contrary to the spirit of the right to freedom of expression guaranteed to Maldivian citizens under the Constitution," the HRCM stated.
However, the Commission did not specify any particular acts committed by the protesters that encouraged violence, nor did it indicate whether it is investigating any such incidents.
Expressing concern over the actions of opposition parties, the HRCM called on party leaders to refrain from such conduct. It also urged relevant state institutions to take necessary and firm action within the legal framework.
