The opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP)'s interim Chairperson Abdul Ghafoor Moosa has called on President Mohamed Muizzu to resign after nearly 70 percent of voters said no to the government in Saturday's referendum to merge the presidential and parliamentary elections.
The MDP won the local council elections held on Saturday. The party also succeeded in its campaign to reject the government's proposal to merge the two key election.
"We are succeeding well. I will always work for righteousness and justice," Ghafoor said at a rally held on Monday night.
He said the people believe that the government is stealing from their treasury, spreading corruption and interfering in the courts.
“I am calling for resignation. When the President loses the people's confidence, he should resign and go home as is done elsewhere in the world,” Ghafoor said.
So far, the provisional results released by the Elections Commission (EC) show that the MDP has won 46 of the 52 seat in the city council, including all mayoral seats.
