Former Chairperson of the opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) Fayyaz Ismail has said that today's election results are a clear message from the people against consolidation of power and injustice.
The MDP is leading in the polls. In a a post on X tonight, Fayyaz congratulated the party candidates in the local council elections and Women's Development Committee (WDC) elections.
"The people of the Maldives have clearly said no to President Muizzu through his vote. I thank all the people who trusted the MDP to hold the government accountable and voted against the President's dictatorial agenda," Fayyaz wrote.
He thanked former President Mohamed Nasheed, former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, the party's interim Chairperson Abdul Ghafoor Moosa and the leadership for working together to achieve this victory.
"This is a clear message from the people against the consolidation of power, the destruction of the economy and the tyranny of the government. This is the result of the opposition putting aside differences and working for the national interest."
In addition to winning local council and WDC seats, the MDP was also successful in its campaign against the government's proposed constitutional amendment to merge the presidential and parliamentary elections.
