MVR 64 million issued to the police from the state budget as compensation for taking back three islands designated for police use has been exhausted.
This was revealed during a meeting of the parliament's Public Accounts Committee on Tuesday during a discussion on information from a whistleblower.
The committee did not disclose who the senior police officials were when the money was spent in an irresponsible manner.
Kaafu Feydhoo Finolhu, Lhaviyani Dhiffushi Maadhoo and Lhaviyani Maabin Huraa islands were previously given to the police.
But these islands were later taken back by the state to develop resorts. In return, the police were given financial compensation.
"The money given to the police has been spent very poorly. About MVR 64 million has been exhausted completely for different things," said Dhiggaru MP Ahmed Nazim.
The committee report said the matter should be investigated further as the compensation owed in return for Maabin Huraa has not been received.
How the money was spent
- Deposited in Bank of Maldives - MVR 24 million
- Two motorcycle shipments - MVR 3 million
- Welfare Fund - MVR 2.3 million
- Blues Phase 2 - MVR 5 million
- Polatte restaurant - MVR 2.8 million
- For shop expenses - MVR 5.5 million and MVR 4.4 million
"The money was exhausted as soon as it was received. It was written in a note that the amount expected to be recovered was MVR 3.1 million. Of this, MVR 58.3 million will not be recovered because the police have just used it up," Nazim said.
He added that the police and their families did not benefit from these funds. The report is expected to be passed at the next meeting.
