A demonstrator who was arrested at the October 3 rally has accused the police of breaking his finger while in custody.
Maafushi Council President Hassan Solah was detained with seven others from the rally organised by the opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP).
His lawyer Musthafa Hameed told reporters on Sunday that police had beaten Solah and broken his left thumb while under custody.
"Solah's left thumb was broken after he was taken into police custody. He has an injury to his ribs as well. These things happened while he was in police custody," Musthafa accused.
He added that Solah had not resisted police when they were detaining him, but said he was repeatedly beaten by officers while in custody.
Musthafa also expressed concern as police delayed medical treatment for more than 24 hours and said the matter would be submitted to the Human Rights Commission of the Maldives (HRCM).
It is unclear whether HRCM is investigating the alleged police brutality towards Solah. The commission has not yet commented on the matter.
