Police have accused the opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) of planning to commit crimes during a rally planned for October 3.
In a statement, the police said they had received information that there were plans to activate criminal groups and create chaos in Male'.
"Police have received information that plans were made to bring various criminal groups to the streets and cause chaos in the city," police said.
It warned that the police would take whatever necessary action for public security.
Police did not provide details about the allegation and have not made any arrests in connection with the information.
Meanwhile, late on Tuesday, hundreds of police officers in riot gear were seen across the capital city.
They were stationed near the Artificial Beach, the venue for the rally, and near Salman Mosque, Raalhugandu area and Jelly Restaurant on the main road of Male'.
