Male' Maldives: Odi Sports Club head coach Andrés García praised his team’s explosive start to the Dhiraagu Dhivehi Premier League 2025/26 campaign but warned that consistency and intensity will be the key if they want to achieve bigger goals this season.
Following a resounding 7–1 victory over Club Valencia, García applauded his players for their dominant display, which sent Odi to the top of the league table on goal difference after two rounds.
“The performance of the guys is incredible,” García said post-match. “We’ve scored 11 goals in two games and conceded just one. It’s a pity we didn’t get the clean sheet today, but the intensity and control from start to finish was excellent.”
Odi’s relentless attacking style was on full display, led by a hat-trick from Lithuanian striker Karolis Laukžemis. The team raced to a 4–0 lead within the first 30 minutes, setting the tone for what turned into a dominant performance. Goals from Sane’, Immi, Ibbe, and Muzdhan Hassan rounded off the night, with Valencia managing only a late consolation goal.
But despite the emphatic win, García was more focused on the bigger picture and maintaining the team’s identity and work ethic.
“At half-time, I told the players: if anyone drops the intensity, it’s over. If we want to aim for something big, no one can relax. Every substitute brought energy and respected the opponent by keeping the tempo high. That’s our way.”
“We have to improve everything, if not, we’re done. This league is competitive, and every team wants to beat you. We can’t afford to drop,” he emphasized.
García, known for his high-pressing, possession-driven style, reiterated the importance of sticking to their identity regardless of the result.
“We are a very offensive team, and the club knows it. Even when we lose, and we will lose at some point, it has to be by playing our way, aggressive, pressing, and wanting the ball.”
He also complimented the overall standard of the league, highlighting clubs like Maziya, New Radiant, Victory, and Buru as serious contenders with talented local and foreign players contributing to a rising level in Maldivian football.
“The level here is very good. Every team is competitive, and the foreign players are helping raise the standard. Our next match against Victory will be another big test.”
Odi Sports Club will now prepare for that crucial clash with Victory Sports Club in Matchday 3, as they aim to continue their perfect start and solidify their position at the top of the table.
