Former President Mohamed Nasheed and former Deputy Speaker Eva Abdulla have decided to rejoin the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), following a resolution passed by The Democrats National Assembly on Tuesday.
The resolution, submitted by Women Democrats leader Fathimath Hamdha Mohamed at Nasheed’s request, was approved by a majority of party members.
It states that members of The Democrats agree to rejoin the MDP, a party from which both Nasheed and Eva had broken away amid internal conflicts.
While the decision marks a major political shift, it has also sparked internal disagreements among some members of The Democrats.
The MDP has not officially responded to the resolution. However, the party’s National Council had earlier passed a resolution expressing willingness to collaborate with other political parties.
