The People’s Majlis failed to convene today despite being required to meet according to parliamentary rules.
The sitting was scheduled as part of the second session of the year, which officially began on Monday, June 2.
However, due to the extended Eid holidays, the session was initially postponed. The Majlis subsequently did not meet on the scheduled Tuesdays and Wednesdays of the previous week. Today’s session was also not held, with no official explanation provided.
Ahmed Maan Assad, the senior media officer of the Majlis, confirmed to Adhadhu that the parliament did not convene. However, he declined to give any reasons for the absence of the session.
Speaker Abdulraheem Abdulla, who concluded last Monday’s session, did not announce when the Majlis would reconvene. The agenda for the missed session included the discussion of two Supreme Court judge appointments and a government-backed amendment to the Civil Aviation Authority Act, proposed by Dhaandhoo MP Mohamed Fazeel.
According to the Majlis rules, parliament is required to convene three times a week during active sessions, on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Wednesdays. However, the 20th People’s Majlis has consistently failed to meet this requirement.
Despite the ruling People’s National Congress (PNC) holding a supermajority in the Majlis, there are increasing claims that sessions are being scheduled at the discretion of the government.
The first session of the 20th Parliament concluded on May 15 after 32 sittings, during which nine bills were enacted. Since then, concerns over irregular scheduling have drawn criticism from opposition members and observers citing transparency and accountability issues.
