Adhadhu has learnt that police lied by claiming that two people connected to Hawwa Yumnu Rasheed's fall on April 18 refused to provide urine samples.
At a closed press conference on April 22, police said two people had refused to give urine samples. At a second televised press conference on April 24, former Police Commissioner Ali Shujau repeated the statement.
Refusing to give a urine sample is an offense punishable by one year in jail under the Drugs Act.
Information obtained by Adhadhu from multiple sources confirmed that the police lied about requesting for urine samples and their refusal.
A source familiar with the matter confirmed that the police did not follow the procedures required to request a urine sample.
At the time, many people expressed concern because the refusal to provide urine sample had been treated as a light matter. But police did not comment.
When contacted by Adhadhu to clarify why the police lied, media officials refused to comment. The police media team said in a message that they would not be responding because an inquiry was underway by the presidential commission.
After police claimed that two people had refused to give urine samples, the Prosecutor General's (PG) office ordered to take action in such cases in the future.
Only Raudh Ahmed Zilal, 22, who was with Yumnu at the time of her fall in Fentenoy house on April 18, was arrested in the case. He was ordered to be detained for the trial, but was released after he filed for appeal. He was re-arrested a few hours later on the same day.
Besides Raudh and Yumnu, police released the names of seven others who partied with them on the night of the incident. Two of the seven people were accused of refusing to give urine samples. Passports have been seized and statements have been taken from all seven of them.
Police have not yet taken Yumnu's statement. Police said on May 22 that they were trying to take her statement through Malaysian police as her family was not cooperating. However, Yumnu's family denied this and said the police had not made a formal request to take her statement.
