The national council of the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has approved an extraordinary congress to be held before August 15.
During the national council meeting on Saturday night, 71 out of 73 members voted to hold the extraordinary congress before August 15.
A committee was also formed to arrange the congress.
The MDP, the largest opposition party, last held its congress in August 2022.
According to the party's constitution, the congress will be held every five years. But an extraordinary congress can be held at any time.
This is the biggest political movement of the MDP. More than 1,100 people attended the last congress in 2022.
