The Islamic Ministry has decided to distribute MVR 4,500 as Fitr Zakat per person for the 2,765 people registered in the poor list.
According to the figures, MVR 12.4 million has been collected as Fitr Zakat so far. The money will be distributed equally to all those on the register.
Islamic Minister Dr. Mohamed Shaheem said the decision to distribute the money equally was to ensure social justice.
"Earlier, we used to distribute the amount collected from each island to those registered as poor on that specific island. Now, the difference is that the whole country will be considered as one region. This is the first such change in the history of Fitr Zakat in Maldives," he said.
With the new change, the entire country will be considered as one region and the money received as Zakat will be distributed equally.
Last year, MVR 8000 was distributed per person in Male'. In 2023, MVR 9 million was received as Fitr Zakat and MVR 3,450 per head was distributed to 1,736 people in Male'.
