Two people arrested from MDP protest

Two people have been arrested from the opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) protest in Male' on Sunday night.

MDP Machchangolhi South Constituency President Ibrahim Abdullah (Gabbarey) and Machchangolhi Central Constituency President Ahmed Shazeen were arrested during the protest.

A large number of police officers gathered to arrest them while the protesters were on Alikilegefaanu Road. Protestors were trying to gather near the President's official residence, Muleeaage.

In addition to police, some officers from the Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) were active in the area. This is the first time that arrests have been made during MDP's series of nightly protests launched on Friday.

On Saturday night, police used pepper spray to disperse protestors. MDP alleged they used undue force. The Human Rights Commission of the Maldives (HRCM) has not confirmed that they are investigating police actions.
