Police have arrested a man accused of involvement in the ongoing violence in Male' after he was denied entry into Malaysia and sent back to the Maldives.
The arrest was made at the Velana International Airport (VIA). The suspect is Hussain Areesh, 31, from Fuvahmulah island.
Police said he is accused of participating in the ongoing assaults in Male' and also suspected of committing dangerous crimes.
He was deported from Malaysia after traveling to the country despite an arrest warrant issued by the Maldives Criminal Court. Areesh has a total of 28 criminal records including drugs and assaults.
In the ongoing series of assaults in the Male' region, a man was attacked with a hatchet near Hulhumale' Rehendhi ground recently.
A man near Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH) was also assaulted with a hammer last week.
Several suspects have been arrested for the assaults and detained for the duration of their trials.
