People who wear helmets in non-mandatory areas will be stopped and searched, the police said on Sunday night.
In a statement issued late last night, the police said some people wear helmets in non-mandatory areas to hide their identity with the intention of committing crimes.
"Helmets are required in areas where vehicle speeds of more than 30 km/h are allowed," police said in the statement.
In Male' area, helmets are compulsory on the Sinamale' bridge and highway to Hulhumale'.
"Therefore, we inform the public that we will continue to monitor people who wear helmets in non-mandatory areas while stopping and searching those found to be suspicious," the statement read.
Police said this is a step to ensure the safety and security of the people and create a safe community.
