One of the suspects arrested in connection with the assault on a man near Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH) last night was previously pardoned by President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, Adhadhu has learnt.

Police have not yet released the details of the suspects, but Adhadhu can confirm that one of them is Ahmed Nabeel who was sentenced to seven years in prison for a conviction on stabbing a man with a knife.

The Criminal Court sentenced him in August 2024. Less than five months have passed since the sentence and the exact date of his release is unknown.

Nabeel is not eligible to request clemency under the Prison and Parole Act. The only way he could have been free is under the special powers given to the President under the Clemency Act.

According to the Clemency Act, if a person had been harmed by the committed offence, the information about the case must be shared with the victim. However, it is unclear whether the Clemency Board completed this procedure.

Police said a man near IGMH was attacked by two people who came on a motorcycle. The case was reported at around 8:40 pm on Tuesday night. One person is being treated for injuries.

Police did not say what weapon was used in the attack, but social media and some local media outlets reported that the man was attacked with a hammer.
