The High Court has cancelled the appeal hearing regarding a lower court order that banned discussion on the "Aisha" documentary with sexual misconduct allegations against President Mohamed Muizzu.
The appeal was filed by Adhadhu CEO Hussain Fiyaz Moosa. The court informed Fiyaz of the cancellation only after he had arrived at the premises with his legal team. The court cited administrative reasons for the postponement.
The Maldives Bar Council has intervened in the case. Following the issuance of the initial court order, the Bar Council released a statement expressing its concerns regarding the ruling.
Since the court order was issued, Adhadhu journalist Mohamed Shahzan was sentenced to 15 days in prison for questioning Muizzu regarding the allegations. Additionally, Leevan Ali Nasir, the journalist who reported on the court order, was sentenced to 10 days in prison.
Furthermore, on Muizzu's orders, Prosecutor General (PG) Abbas Shareef raised criminal charges against Fiyaz and Adhadhu Editor Hassan Mohamed in connection with the documentary.
Prior to these legal actions, police conducted a raid on the Adhadhu office. During the operation, authorities seized 20 electronic devices.
