The opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP)'s Chairperson, Fayyaz Ismail, has called on the Supreme Court Justices to defend the Constitution and the rights of the people without hesitation.

Speaking at the MDP rally in Male' on Friday night, Fayyaz said the Supreme Court is the only institution the public believes has some level of independence.

“I want to tell the Supreme Court Justices that they should think about this journey to democracy by the Maldivian people and must work without fear and hesitation to defend the Constitution and the people's rights," he stated.

"The people of Maldives are watching. It will be written in the history of Maldives who upheld the work done by the people of Maldives for the past 25 years and defended those rights."

Fayyaz added that MDP will work to change the government and ensure that the rights of the people are not lost in the coming days.

“We will work on behalf of the MDP in the coming days to change this government and ensure that the rights of the people guaranteed in the Constitution are not violated," he said.

He stressed that the MDP worked for many days and overcame fear to get the current Constitution.

Fayyaz said the people of Maldives got the biggest assurance in 2010 with the start of the health insurance scheme but the people have now been deprived of that right with the current government's ineffectual policy.

Hundreds of people attended the MDP rally in Male' on Friday night. They marched across the city expressing their disapproval towards the government and calling for President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu's resignation.
