The Democrats have filed a complaint with the police seeking an investigation after about 700 party members were registered to the ruling People's National Congress (PNC) without their knowledge.
The party's interim vice president Hussain Firushan told reporters outside the police station that around 700 members have become victims of the ruling party's membership fraud.
"We noticed that about 500 members of our party have been registered to the ruling PNC. We have received complaints from those members. A total of around 700 members have been registered to PNC," Firushan stated.
He said the Democrats filed a complaint with the police today seeking a criminal investigation into the PNC's membership fraud.
“When we looked at the database, we noticed that the party had a decline in members since August. Then we called the members and checked with them. The members did not know they were removed from the Democrats and registered to the PNC. So this is a big problem. This is a big crime. This is a big loss to the political parties, to the entire multiparty system," he said.
He added that the matter will be submitted to the Elections Commission (EC) as well.
Earlier, the main opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) filed a complaint with the police after 96 party members were registered as members of the PNC.
