The Civil Court has issued an injunction to halt the government's decision to repossess a land plot allocated to the former President of the Elections Commission, Mohamed Zahid, under the "Binveriya" housing scheme.
In the temporary order issued last Tuesday, the Civil Court directed the Housing Ministry to refrain from any actions that could create third-party rights over the land until a final verdict is reached in the ongoing case.
The Housing Ministry had moved to void the agreement for a land plot in Hulhumalé previously granted to Zahid under the scheme. Zahid was officially notified of the cancellation of the agreement by the Ministry on July 2, 2026.
Adhadhu understands that the agreement for the land allocated to Zahid was terminated because he is not a native of Malé.
Zahid has filed a lawsuit in the Civil Court seeking to overturn the Housing Ministry's decision and requesting a legal declaration that the land plot rightfully belongs to him.
The request for an injunction was made to ensure that the land remains available to Zahid should the court rule in his favour; if the plot were assigned to a third party, there would be no legal avenue for him to reclaim that property.
