The opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) Chairperson Fayyaz Ismail has announced that he will contest in the party primary to elect a candidate for the next presidential election.
He made the announcement in a message on the WhatsApp group of MDP national council.
"I think the party's Twitter handle should be abolished. There are too many children. For everyone's attention. I have decided to contest in the 2028 presidential primary. Please support me," he wrote.
The former Economic minister did not elaborate on his decision, but sources close to him confirmed that it was a serious decision.
Appearing on Adhadhu's Ethere Fuh talk show last week, Fayyaz said he was interested in running for President but said that he had not decided on contesting for President in 2028.
"A lot of people will claim they are not interested. I am interested. But that doesn't mean I'm determined to do it in 2028," he said.
No other candidate has officially announced their intention to contest in the MDP presidential primary.
However, there are rumours that MDP President Abdulla Shahid, Male' City Mayor Adam Azim and former Vice President Faisal Naseem could be potential candidates in the primary.
