The Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has condemned the government's actions to intimidate and harass women in the workplace.
In a press release, the MDP Women's Wing said the party has made great strides in empowering women in social, economic and political fields but the new government of People's National Congress-Progressive Party of Maldives (PNC-PPM) was limiting opportunities for women.
"This party strongly condemns the violation of the basic rights of educated, experienced and professional employees who have worked in the civil service for decades by subjecting them to intimidation and psychological harm for political purposes," it stated.
The MDP also alleged that the people were expressing concern over the Ministry of Social and Family Development's cruelty towards women in the workplace.
Women are questioning whether there is any authority that will provide protection for them under this government, the party added.
"Despite not doing more for women, the biggest concern today is the increasing harassment against women in this government. This government has become a threat to women working in the civil service," the MDP said.
The MDP's press release comes amid accusations by a former senior employee of the Social and Family Development Ministry against Minister Aishath Shiham and senior officials of the ministry.
