Russian Ambassador Levan Dzhagaryan has called on former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom to refrain from following the West's "policy of double standards."
In a post on X on Tuesday, Gayoom raised concerns over Russian attacks on Ukraine and criticised the UN Security Council.
"Does UN Security Council still exist? BBC says Russia had launched massive air attacks on Ukraine during the last two nights. But no news of any UN reaction!" he wrote.
The Russian embassy responded in a post on Facebook with Ambassador Dzhagaryan stating that it was an unacceptable tweet by the former President.
"First of all, I'd like to suggest the ex-head of state studies the reasons of the Special Military Operation by the Russian Armed Forces, namely the NATO intensively approaching the Russian frontiers and neo-nazi nature of the Kiev regime," the post read.
"I strongly call Mr. Gayoom to refrain from following the policy of double standards traditionally pursued by the collective West."
The post stated that Russia and Ukraine were close to a peaceful settlement of the conflict, but the United States and the United Kingdom disrupted the talks and instructed Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to continue the war.
"In total it is 4 times that our country came forward with peaceful initiatives. The last one was announced by H.E. President of Russia Mr. Vladimir Putin in June," it stated.
The ambassador also called on Gayoom to express his indignation with the UN Security Council's inability to put an end to the Palestinian people's sufferings in the Gaza Strip because of one country's negative stance.
Gayoom responded to the Dzhagaryan's post on Thursday evening and said his comment had been "misinterpreted and taken out of context."
"My tweet does not imply that the reporting by the BBC is accurate or not. We must emphasize that any continued conflict is hugely damaging to many states not involved in it, such as the Maldives, and that it continues to have a detrimental effect on the global economy," he said in a post on X.
